Originally from Shizuoka, Japan, Takahiro Yamamoto is an artist based in Portland, working specifically in dance performance, sculpture, and photography. His practice is sociological and observational. It formally and metaphorically investigates intricacies in exposing performer’s idiosyncratic beings on stage such as physical qualities, emotional states, habitual behaviors, and expression of spontaneous thoughts. Both of his performance productions and visual art works have been shown at Links Hall (Chicago), GoDown Arts Centre (Nairobi, Kenya), Bedlam Lowertown (St.Paul), Fresh Festival (San Francisco), Center on Contemporary Arts (Seattle), Rowan Gallery (Los Angeles), and Disjecta (Portland). He has performed for Xavier Le Roy (Montpellier), Mårten Spångberg (Stockholm), Keith Hennessy (San Francisco), Jmy James (Los Angeles), Perseverance Theatre Company (Alaska) and others. In 2014, he was invited to Nairobi by Kenyan choreographer Opiyo Okach to work closely with local artists. It culminated into a dance performance conversation, which he choreographed and collaborated with local dancers. He holds a master of fine arts degree in Visual Studies at Pacific Northwest College of Art. He is a recipient of 2015 Creative Exchange Lab administered by Portland Institute for Contemporary Art and 2012 danceWEB scholarship in the frame of ImPulsTanz festival in Vienna, Austria. He co-directs a performance company madhause with Ben Evans, and a part of Portland-based group Physical Education with Allie Hankins, Keyon Gaskin, and Lu Yim.
